LAYING HENS
The Étiquette Bien-Être Animal (Animal Welfare Label) approach now assesses the welfare level of parents, chicks, pullets and laying hens.well-being of parents, chicks, pullets and laying hens thanks to a specific reference system!
The technical standard assesses the welfare of laying hens, from birth to the end of production. It is the result of close collaboration between all players in the production chain (producers, packing centers, distributors) and animal protection NGOs. It is also based on several external consultations (experts, equipment manufacturers, technical institutes, etc.) and on white field audits, in order to ensure its operationality and relevance.
The standard applies to both shell eggs and egg products.
144 precise criteria are evaluated, including result indicators that can be directly observed on the animals.
- 26 criteria are evaluated for parents and hatcheries
- 23 criteria for pullet rearing
- 86 criteria for rearing laying hens
- 9 criteria for collection and traceability.
Every year, 100% of layer farms are audited by independent bodies and qualified auditors. The other stages (hatcheries, pullet farms) are 100% audited before the first labeling, and then every two years.
The assessment is specific to the laying hen sector, and cannot be transposed identically to assess the level of animal welfare in another sector.
The reference guide, which includes all the elements needed to assess the level of animal welfare (explanation of the approach, audit protocols to be followed, detailed explanatory aids, scoring grid, scientific references and appendices) is available to operators involved in the approach.
