BROILERS
The Étiquette Bien-Être Animal initiative evaluates each phase of a broiler chicken's life, from birth in the hatchery to slaughter, including rearing and transport.
The standards used to assess chicken welfare gather about 230 criteria. These criteria are checked at several levels: with the farm, the farmers’ association, the hatchery, the transporter and the slaughterhouse, through audits carried out by third-party inspection bodies. Some criteria are mandatory to reach some animal welfare scores, given their importance in terms of animal protection.
The standards include all the elements needed to properly assess the animal welfare level (explanation of the process, auditing protocols, detailed explanatory material, scoring grid, scientific references and appendices) is made available to operators committed to the initiative.
The standards are specifically designed for the broiler sector. They cannot be implemented identically to assess the level of animal welfare of another sector.
Frequent exchanges with the industry and on-site field tests ensured that the system is operational and relevant, by comparing it with realities on the ground.
