Eight supermarket chains promote the Animal Welfare Label!

Paris, February 18, 2025
Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, Coopérative U, Franprix, Lidl, Monoprix and Mousquetaires are proposing more transparent shelves for consumers by displaying the animal welfare level of their products. With more than thirty ranges labelled A, B or C, these eight chains have joined forces in an on-shelf and online communication campaign to promote the Animal Welfare Label.
This joint labeling initiative is part of a drive to meet consumer demand for products that are more respectful of animal welfare: in February 2024, over 50% of European consumers said that animal welfare had an influence on their purchasing decisions. In France, the issue of animal welfare is still of great concern to society, with 82% wanting France to support the introduction of compulsory farming method labelling on meat.
Retailers who actively support consumer information on the level of animal welfare behind products
With nearly thirty ranges labeled for animal welfare, the eight banners have joined forces to communicate about the labeling process, both on the shelves and online.Auchan comments: "As a member of the Association Étiquette Bien-Être Animal, and alongside other committed retailers, we are proud to communicate on the labeling approach, which fits in perfectly with our ambitions by giving consumers the opportunity to make 'The right choice' in terms of animal welfare."
L'Étiquette Bien-Être Animal, a unique associative initiative pioneered in France:
- Transparency: Specific information on the level of animal welfare, with a scale from A to E, and a pictogram to quickly identify the farming method.
- Robustness: complete traceability from birth to slaughter.
- Control: Each facility, from birth to slaughter, is audited at least once a year by independent bodies and qualified auditors.

For supermarket chains, this approach is part of a commitment to transparency: it can be applied to all products on a shelf, whatever their production methods. Through this visibility and the associated specifications, this commitment accompanies the industry towards better practices and contributes to improving the living conditions of farm animals.
An approach recognized throughout France and Europe
The French Animal Welfare Label is a true European benchmark, and meets all national and international recommendations in terms of animal welfare labeling, such as the guidelines issued by ANSES in March 2024.
Recent deployment statistics
- The Association currently has 24 members: animal protection NGOs, producers, processors and distributors.
- The volume of products covered by the label continues to grow, with over 15% of French broiler production labeled since the launch of the program, representing 40% of French chicken farmers audited (3,700 farms).
- Another indicator of the approach's success is that 60% of free-range chicken farmers (organic and Label Rouge) have signed up.
- Nearly 70% of supermarkets are committed to the Animal Welfare Label initiative: in addition to A and B-rated products, over 80% of these supermarkets now offer C-rated products on their shelves.
Next steps: labeling pork and egg cartons
Following the success of the broiler label, you'll soon find pork and egg products also labelled on the shelves of member brands!
