Paris, July 3, 2025
The Animal Welfare Label Association and all its members are proud to announce the launch of the first Animal Welfare Label in the pork sector! Following a process of co-construction with all players in the industry, Auchan and the Unébio producers' group are today unveiling the first pork products to display the animal welfare label.
With over 310 criteria assessed throughout the animal's life, and a grading scale ranging from A to E*, this is a real step forward in terms of transparency of information for consumers, the industry and farm animals.
The French want information on animal welfare : in an Opinion Way survey carried out for Lit Ouesterel in February 2025, 88% of French people are interested in farming conditions. Among priority actions for the development of livestock farming, 71% of French people say they would prefer a product with a higher level of animal welfare, even if this implies a higher price.**
Auchan, pioneer in pig welfare labelling: discover the products!
"At Auchan, we are committed to offering our customers ever greater transparency. That's why we're proud to be the first to display labels on our shelves indicating a higher level of animal welfare for pork from our responsible supply chain. This progress is the fruit of a collective effort involving committed breeders, industry players and animal protection NGOs. It rewards the good practices already in place, and encourages farming methods that are even more respectful of animal welfare", Matthieu Trenchand, Food Quality Leader.
The Animal Welfare Label is now available on "Auchan Cultivons le Bon" fresh produce in Auchan stores!

A comprehensive assessment of pig welfare based on over 310 criteria
L'Étiquette evaluates over 310 criteria covering the entire life cycle of the animal, from birth (breeding sow farms) to slaughter and fattening conditions.
The Pork Label presents 5 increasing levels of animal welfare, from E (minimum) to A (highest level):

A co-construction approach involving all players in the industry
A working group made up of members of the Association Étiquette Bien-Être Animal and members of the LIT OUESTEREL (producers, processors, distributors, technical institutes, scientists, animal protection NGOs) have been actively working on the development of a common technical reference system, responding to the various challenges facing the pork industry.

The Étiquette Bien-Être Animal (Animal Welfare Label) approach is being rolled out!
Visit Auchan stores to find the 30 broiler references already labelled (Lyré and Auchan), and look out for the 7 pork references today!
What's more, the Animal Welfare Label will soon be available on eggs! At the same time, members of the Association are actively working on the development of a technical reference system for dairy cows.

*The Association Étiquette Bien-Être Animal considered that the scale of the investments required and the additional costs incurred to achieve level C justified a transitional period, the duration and terms of which have yet to be defined. For the time being, therefore, level C cannot be labelled.
